Battle for Jharkhand: Campaigning ends for second phase of polls on 20 seats of Jharkhand

Ranchi: Campaigning on Thursday came to an end for the election on the 20 seats in the second phase of Vidhan Sabha polls in Jharkhand which are located in Kolhan and South Chottanagpur divisions of the state.

State’s Chief Electoral Officer Vinay Kumar Choubey said that on Jamshedpur East and Jamshedpur West seats polling will be held from 0700hrs to 1700hrs while in the remaining 18 seats it will be held from 0700hrs to 1500hrs.

The seats which will go into polls in this phase included Bahragora, Ghatshila (ST), Potka (ST), Jugsalai (SC), Jamshedpur East, Jamshedpur West, Saraikela (ST), Kharsawan (ST), Manjhgaon (ST), Jaggananthpur (ST), Manoharpur (ST), Chakardharpur (ST), Tamar (ST), Mandar (ST), Torpa (ST), Khunti (ST), Sisai (ST), Simdega (ST) and Kolibera (ST).

A total of 260 candidates including 231 male and 29 female candidates are in the race on these 20 seats out of which 16 are reserved for Scheduled Tribes and 1 for Schedule Caste. Only three seats are in the general category.

These 20 seats are spread across 7 districts including Ranchi Simdega Khunti Gumla East Singhbhum West Singhbhum and Saraikela-Kharsawan.

Assembly wise a maximum number of 20 candidates are contesting on Jamshedpur East and Jamshedpur West while only 7 candidates are in the race for Saraikela seat. Apart from them on Behragora seat the number of candidates was 14, Ghatshila 16, Potka 10, Jugsalai 10, Kolibera 9, Kharsawan 16, Chaibasa 13, Manjhigaon 16, Jaggannathpur 13, Manoharpur 14, Chakardharpur 12, Tamar 17, Mandar 13, Torpa 8, Khunti 11, Sisai 10 and Simdega 11.

As far as the women candidates are concerned a maximum of three candidates were in the race in Potka, Chaibasa and Manoharpur. Prominent candidates who are in the race for these 20 seats included Chief Minister Raghubar Das, former cabinet minister Saryu Rai, State BJP president Laxman Giluwa, cabinet minister Neelkanth Singh Munda, former JPCC chief Pradeep Balmuchu, Raja Peter and Kundan Pahan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP’s national acting president JP Nadda, Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari and other senior leaders of BJP campaigned in this phase so did Rahul Gandhi of the Congress party, Hemant Soren of JMM, Tejaswi Yadav of RJD, Babulal Marandi of JVM and Sudesh Mahto for AJSU.
